Description
Memento Mori with Lemons in a ceramic bowl with human skull in blues and purples impressionistic art. Memento Mori with Lemons in a ceramic bowl with human skull in blues and purples impressionistic art reminded the chef that he needed to think about life itself. The lemons and skulls were meant to represent an ongoing reminder of death, which was part of living, but not all that life had to offer: there was life before death and after it, too. That's what made it interesting—not only the end but also the beginning and everything in between. While the citrus were thought to be reminders of immortality, they could just as easily have represented mortality, reminding one that they would eventually die so they might live now, while they still could.
The chef found himself thinking of his own life when he looked at the lemons, but the skull was stark and philosophical as a memento mori. The fragrance reminded him of his past. While the blues and purple swirls of the painting indicated that he was to be reminded of death, the color black symbolized time. He'd been born into a world where both were considered important; he wondered if this painting was symbolic of the world of magic or something else entirely. But the lemons were warm and vibrant and they seemed to be saying that there was more to life than merely being dead. They were alive in every sense, from their scent to their taste to their look. In some ways, it was almost like a metaphor for what the restaurant was trying to achieve: a way of life rather than simply a food. The acidity of the citrus was refreshing, while the warmth of the oils and spices brought out the sweetness. It made him want to eat them even though he knew they were meant to remind him of death. They were a paradox: life and death coexisting in a single dish. Lemons and skulls. Please enjoy this painting.
