Description
The loose and structural painting of a portrait of a young girl with purple ribbons in hair that is smiling back at the artist with her nose ring flashing at us and depicted in a warm and full color vibrancy like a festival that is celebrating life and amusement is rich in compositional and symbolic elements. It's not just a single female portrait in a wash of colors that are vibrant and celebratory. But one of the acrylic artistic expressions of charcoal hiding in her hair and the idea of festivals, swirly lolipops, and cotton candy. It's not easy to spot, but the artist gave enough clues in this portrait. Take the picture's background—it's a studio background where all the artist needs do is set up his easel and canvas and put down the paint; there is no need to work out his subject's exact place of setting in the studio since its mere presence would tell him its spatial arrangement with reference to everything else. In other words, he doesn't bother with such niceties as lighting.
Nor does he bother with making the model move or change posture or gesture to give him an idea of what she actually looks like when she moves or smiles or frowns—because here the painter doesn't think that a figure can really do anything that might make a difference in a face's look or a smile's quality. Instead he takes it for granted that the way his subject appears on any given occasion is determined entirely by external influences. In a word, he thinks his sitter's facial expressions and poses and body postures are fixed, and thus has no use for them. He sees only what his eye makes of their surfaces—a surface in which he himself plays the dominant part. Take the ribbon in her hair as a perfect example of a Sargent like artistic element. It's merely there so that he can make it appear in one or another of several different positions and at several distances from the head and upper part of the torso that have been established according to his personal taste and whim.
The loose strokes and award winning painting of her smile is a great example of a striking study of life. Her smiling mouth looks so full and open; her lips are like those of an angel. And what she holds in her hands is a flower with purple ribbons. That shows you what she thinks is important about herself—a deep appreciation of flowers with pretty ribbons and a liking for the color purple.
The pose, the expression, and the colors all go together to suggest the kind of woman who likes festivals, pretty ribbons in her hair, and is fond of eating cotton candy. And this kind of woman must be a young and lively sort, not old and dowdy like Mrs. Banksy. It's the girls expression that captivates us and drives our imagination. What if we were to meet this lovely girl and find that she's the type that always smiles like this? Would we ever see any sadness or bitterness, or anything but fun and amusement and enjoyment in her eyes? She'd never make us feel depressed, nor would she make us long to see her happy because she looks are as joyful as the color splotches and the the understudy within the artwork.
The deliberate paint helps us understand the form of the woman in the portrait. And the fact that we don't know how many ribbons are in her hair suggests her youth. In this respect the picture resembles a Sargent, and its Sargentian elements are the loose and spontaneous paint strokes that are not intended to depict an external reality.
