Description
woman nude figure sketch holding washbasin in sepia charcoal and umbers represents the entire thesis of philosophical conversation surrounding the female issues of our modern day. These are the things we must consider. The self-worth, self-esteem and self-determination that make us who we are, regardless of age or gender. It is a question we have asked ourselves for most of my life: who am I? This figure sketch defines the answer to this important question. And it also shows how we define ourselves through culture, socialization and our very own definitions of beauty. Furthermore, the lopsidedness represents the reality that woman undergo in all things in our societal structures.
The first portrait I ever drew was of my grandmother. She is a rather large woman, with broad shoulders and a long neck, so I was forced to make her head smaller and put her at a slight angle. It is this stooped aspect that my current painting represents with the female figure stooped with her washbasin at the river doing chores. Chores that may seem trivial to those who do them without thought every day. For those of us who don't, however, I believe this portrayal will surely strike a chord. Women, like men, have always worked hard to support themselves and their families; yet, many times, they are viewed by society as being lesser people because of it. How can one not feel sympathy for a person who works tirelessly all day long just to provide for herself and her family? It's this dichotomy that I wanted to embed into this female figure sketch.
This piece was created on a small scale, using only two color of sepia and umbers, but with different textures via charcoals and some black ink, The charcoals were of four different kinds. The dappled textures of the artist's fingers, as well as some other minor changes, are what give this work its unique character, and again, gives it the feeling of an intimate moment between one human being and another.
I used a tiny amount of black ink around the edges of this composition, but not enough to take away from the overall theme of woman's issues in our day. In fact, I think there can be little doubt that this painting would have been quite popular during any time period. I myself find it fascinating. It has a sense of nostalgia and delicacy that reminds me of a time when such subjects were treated more delicately and with greater sensitivity than they often are today.
