Fairy Tales: The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen is a classic fairy tale about an innocent young woman who falls in love with a handsome prince but gives up everything she has to win his heart—even her life. In this painting the artist took the theme and ran with it into new directions. The colors are bolder than usual for this kind of fairy tale; they are more vibrant and vivid than the muted tones used by most painters. Instead of using a background of flowers or birds as seen in many other paintings, the artist painted the waves and seascape behind the mermaids themselves. It's a clever move that makes the subject of the painting stand out even more strongly.
In this story, a beautiful mermaid princess falls in love with a human prince. She spends all day long watching him from afar. But in contrast to the fairy tale this one has sea monsters and sunken ships with mechanical components on them. One day the mermaid decides to go down to the sea bottom to meet her lover. When he sees her at last he recognizes her beauty immediately. He invites her to join him on land and take some time away from the sea.
When the prince asks her if she will marry him, the mermaid says yes without hesitation, although she knows that such a thing would be impossible because she cannot leave the sea. However, she promises him she'll come back someday so they can live together. The trident helps indicate that in life we have bifurcations that must be acted on. When we prepare ourselves we can be prepared to travel down any one of the forks and make some things wonderful happen. Most people just rely on winging it, and this leads to being on the wrong pathway.
The ship on the floor came from an epic battle between the mermaid and a shark that had been attacking her and her sisters. This particular ship was destroyed during the fight and the mermaid couldn't bring herself to leave it there. So she decided to use it to build something new instead of letting it rust and rot. Her goal was to create a place where the two could be together forever. And we can take this metaphorical grasp on life in just the same way. While the fairy tale has been further explored in this painting the colors burst forth. They seem to almost leap off the canvas and demand attention. We see these bright colors in a setting that seems very modern compared to other versions of the story.
A lot of the paintings depicting the Little Mermaid are done in a similar style and color palette. Many artists paint their own version of the story, but not much else. There is little variation in how they depict the characters. Some have included different elements while others have stuck with the traditional ones. Still others have added extra scenes. This artist has gone and ran with his own bifurcation of the story enhancing it, and enriching our lives with the splendid visual artistry. We can all be stuck in the Atlantis or attacked by Sea Monsters. But in the hero portion of our own storied we are the mermaids swishing about and gleaming under the crashing waves in blue and purple. When we rise to the top and float in the sea foam or dive deep and bury in the soft silt of the on the ocean floor near a tragic sea wreck ship on the ocean bed and watching the sea horses marching through the painful wreck we see the gleaming trident as our knight in shining armor, and fear our reliance on mechanical instruments, here depicted in green, yellow, and warm reds.
