Description
The captivating artwork of an old rustic man standing in front of his Appalachian cabin in the woods while a torrent of water streams down onto his head soaking the very fiber of his being while splattering off his bald head and pouring down his features in huge drips is extremely compelling. It snags you as you walk past with the thick textured impasto strokes in purple and yellow. It draws you in with the cold stare of the bearded old man's eyes. They scream at you, and reaches down into your very soul. The painting talks. It says that this man needs to be loved by someone because he has been forgotten. He doesn't have any friends anymore, no one cares about him. And so why not help? Why not make a difference? The water streaming down his face reminds you that tears aren't just for women. Men cry too!
The artist wanted to capture the very essence of what it means to love another person. That is, after all, what makes us human, our need to care about each other. We are social creatures. All throughout history people have struggled to find meaning in their lives in order to feel happy. This man's goal was to show how important it is to share the joys of life with those around you. He wants everyone to know that even if you're alone, you can still make a difference. You don't have to be rich or famous in order to do good things for others. Sometimes all you need is time and compassion. The mountain folk of the Appalachian have a way with the land. They are in tune with nature. We too must learn from them and live life in harmony with the world around us.
As you stand there staring at the painting, you start to realize something. His sadness isn't really that deep. It's just a mask to hide a deeper pain. At the top of the painting you see it, the water dripping down in a huge faucet full stream. Cold and uninviting, yet you lean in to see the glistening paint on the cold gray blue water in the mix of the warm purple and yellow tones. It's a metaphor for the flow of life itself. There will always be ups and downs, but when you look back you'll realize that the valleys were necessary to grow stronger. A wise sage once said, "Life is like a waterfall. Just let it flow." And for it must. This painting is the perfect depiction of how life should be lived.
You walk away having learned more than you ever thought possible about life, art, and yourself. For you now understand better than anyone else on earth what it means to be a man. You must let go of the past and embrace the present. If you want to be strong in the future, you must first be weak in the now. Let the water flow over your features.
