Description
When we first saw the painting of a large duck in the style of Chagall we were mesmerized by the similarities of the strokes, symbols, and elements that were on the canvas.
A large duck dominates, but there are hints of Bella and her flowers, the small Russian village church with its tall spire rising above the forested landscape. The dotted trees, thick paints, and the floating figures that are typical in his artwork. But when viewed with a more philosophical lens the artwork begins to help shape us as humans. We begin to see that this painting is about love, loss, longing, and finding yourself again after heartache. It's not just a duck.
See the way the duck comes in from the side of the painting, and you'll notice his feet lead. They are bright orange and stand out in the low forest. It's a metaphor for new beginnings; it's time to move forward. In life you have to keep moving. You can't stay stagnant or you'll drown. He also has closed his wings which can spread wide, which symbolize freedom. They are closed at this time, and this is an indication that we must embrace what lies ahead, even if it hurts. He is looking back at where he came from, but he has to let go of all the pain and past sorrows and be reborn.
That is why there are two red flowers hovering over him. Bella is often a bouquet of flowers, but here she is just one red one. The singleton, the only one on the canvas, it's meant to be that way. We are all alone, yet together, because we are connected to each other through our emotions, thoughts, and feelings. If we open up to someone else they will do the same to us. When Bella was alive, I think Chagall painted many versions of her with different types of flowers in them. She was either that or floating above, and in this art the canvas depicts her in what looks like a white river that cuts through the painting. Dividing it, just as we divide ourselves into two people—Bella and me. We are both happy and sad, but we cannot escape those emotions. This painting represents a lot of things.
Love, loss, loneliness, sadness, rebirth, forgiveness, hope, and friendship. But the old small villages that dotted the countryside were poor, and guided by the leaders within the tall spires. They were thought leaders and usually held the most power. People would flock to them. Nowadays, people want to live in big cities with skyscrapers, traffic, and hustle and bustle. But it doesn't matter where you go, you always end up being surrounded by your fellow man. The old villages symbolize small mindedness, and closed thoughts. They are dark places filled with fear, anger, hatred, and darkness. Just like our hearts and minds are darkened by the events in our lives. So don't be afraid to seek guidance from others.
It's the juxtaposition fo the bright and vibrant thick paint that contrasts with the bleakness that hides deeper within the artwork. We are not the only ones who feel lost and lonely. Everyone feels that way sometimes. Sometimes we need to take a step back, close our eyes, and remember who we once were. Then we realize we've never stopped loving Bella, but we needed to get through it on our own. Look again at the painting and see if it breathes out to you calling for you to come home. Maybe that's why it's called "The Ducks Quack Shall Return."
And so, my friends,
Let's pause and sing a song,
Of the world that is passing away,
In search of a new world coming down.
We are the ones that are here,
We will not leave.
The ones we left behind are gone;
We have lost them in this world.
So let us keep searching for the New World—
It should be just around the corner!
Bella and Chagall will live forever, so can we.
